One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24 (NIV)
In reading Bible verses about loneliness, this one came up about having reliable friends. I’m glad to say that while it seems to me that I don’t have a lot of close friends, the ones I do have are very reliable and always look out for me; help me when I need it, and will listen and care about what I am going through. I am grateful for those people in my life. At the same time, I try to do the same for them as well. Because the best way to have friends is to be a friend-specifically a true friend. One who will exhibit those qualities described above. And while I stumble and don’t always get it right, I do try to be good as good to others as I hope they would be to me.
But every now and then, when it feels like I’m not close enough to my friends, I always have the one, true friend “who sticks closer than a brother.” And reading that verse, and knowing that friend is Jesus, made me think of the Winans’ song with Aaron Hall of Guy from a few years ago. It reminded me that no one loves me more than Jesus does. Marvin Winans even quotes the latter part of Proverbs 18:24 right before they begin to sing.
So as a reminder, here is the Winans with “A Friend.” Remember that when your friends let you down, or you feel alone and without a friend, there is always one who will always be by your side.
