On last night’s show, four more spots were filled for the live playoffs. Since the show was only one hour long, we had three knockout pairings. Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera were the only coaches with steals remaining.
The first of these was Corey Kent White taking on Cody Wickline for Team Blake. Corey sang “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw, while Cody went with “Til My Last Day” by Justin Moore. Cody performed first and his classic country voice went very well with his song choice. Corey’s performance was full of passion; so much so, you could feel it as he sang. Both gentlemen performed very well, giving Blake a tough decision right out of the gate. The choice to go to the live playoffs was Corey.
Knockout pairing number two featurned Blaze Johnson against Deanna Johnson for Team Adam. Blaze chose “You Found Me” by The Fray, while Deanna took on Roxette’s “Listen To Your Heart” in a stripped down, acoustic arrangement. Blaze’s performance was shaky from the beginning, and he never really found his footing throughout the performance. Deanna’s performance was full of nerves, but it was free from any glaring errors. Adam chose Deanna as the winner. But Adam, as well as Pharrell, advised Deanna to control her nerves and believe in herself and her talent. I agree; there is something in her voice that could be phenomenal, but she has to believe and have confidence in it.
The final knockout pairing of the night featured Caitlin Caporale and Hannah Kirby for Team Pharrell. Hannah chose “Higher Love” by Steve Winwood as her song, while Caitlin performed “Warrior” by Demi Lovato. Hannah’s performance started at ten and never let up; she also featured some weird choreography to go along with those powerful vocals. I wouldn’t say it was a bad performance, but she really didn’t show much nuance in her vocal. Caitlin, on the other hand, built up beautifully in her performance, which was controlled and well structured and sung. Pharrell chose Caitlin as the winner, but Hannah was stolen by Blake.
The knockout rounds will finish up next week, and then the live shows will begin. Christina has the final steal left in the round. When the dust settles, we will have the top 20 singers left. Hopefully all of them will heed the admonition in the title of this post and believe in, and trust their talent.
