The Voice 5/12 Recap: Onward To The Finals

Gotta hand it to NBC and The Voice. They really tried their best to ratchet up the drama for last night’s results show. Revealing the finalists one at a time until two remained in the bottom and had to sing for their safety was just the way to do it. Even as the show padded out with four additional performances and a plug for Red Nose Day, as well as artist questions and a video, they know what the audience wants. And what the audience wants, the audience gets. At least some of the time.

So here we go:

America Saves! #1: Sawyer Fredericks. No surprise; he’s definitely one of the front runners.

America Saves! #2: Meghan Linsey. Again, no surprise. Has been every bit as consistent as Sawyer, and may even be slightly favored to win over the youngster.

America Puts In The Bottom Two: And NBC throws a curve ball. Rather than give us the third finalist right away, they decide to reveal one of the bottom two. And that person is: India Carney. For the third week in a row, India is forced to sing to remain on the show. I call that a sign that her luck is about to run out.

America Saves! #3: Joshua Davis. I’m betting it was close between him and Koryn Hawthorne, but I think he did just enough to warrant a spot in the finals. I don’t think he has much chance to win though, as the other two singers are clearly better and have been more consistent throughout.

That brings us to the Instant Save portion of the show, in use for the final time. And so, leading off we have India Carney, who picks Kelly Clarkson’s “Dark Side” as her song. I’m not sure what India can do to escape this week, especially after two close calls, but she gives her all one more time to garner those votes:

Koryn gives it one last shot with Beyoncé’s “If I Were A Boy.” Those powerful pipes really came out on this one, but again there’s something about her singing that almost sounds painful to me. Not saying she’s a bad singer by any stretch, but to me, she’s only really had three or four outstanding performances all season. This wasn’t one of them, but it might be enough to keep her around for the finals.

Looking at the Instant Save numbers before the graphic was removed, it appeared that Koryn had a sizable advantage over India. And once the result was announced, it proved to be true. The last spot in the finals went to Koryn Hawthorne, which also meant that Christina Aguilera was the first coach to have her artists eliminated. To these ears, the competition is Sawyer’s or Meghan’s to lose, with Joshua and Koryn sitting further back. By this time next week, we will have a new winner.

To recap:

Team Adam: Joshua Davis

Team Blake: Meghan Linsey

Team Pharrell: Sawyer Fredericks, Koryn Hawthorne

One of them will win it. Tune in next week to find out who.
