Somehow it slipped my mind that today was Aaliyah’s birthday. Had she lived, she would have been 37 years old today. Her career was really starting to take flight when she passed away in a tragic plane crash. Billboard magazine has an article posted online listing the eleven best covers of Aaliyah’s songs. There are some good ones on the list; there’s even one from JoJo (who covers “Rock The Boat”), who I have posted about here. If you liked Aaliyah’s music, take a look at that list. The one that interested me the most was the one done by Tess Henley, with some help from Fitz80.
Henley’s take on “Are You That Somebody,” the hit from the Eddie Murphy starring Dr. Doolittle movie, starts at a slower pace, with just her voice and the electric piano handling the first verse and chorus. Then she counts it off and Fitz80 joins in with some serious beatboxing. To me, it’s a fun cover version, full of joy. Henley states that the song is her favorite by Aaliyah, and she performs it very well.
Henley has been around for awhile now, but hasn’t released any new music since her EP Wonderland dropped in 2014. Here’s hoping she releases a new album or at least some new music soon. Her High Heels & Sneakers was one of my favorite releases of 2013. Here’s hoping her career keeps moving forward. Based on this performance, I see no reason why it shouldn’t.
Happy birthday, babygirl.
