In a post that I never got around to writing, I wanted to list some of my favorite songs and albums that were released last year. One of those that I surely would have included was Leon Bridges’ Coming Home album, and his album closer “River.” Bridges has what I, and many others would call a throwback sound. His album has a vintage, 60s soul kind of vibe, but it sounds oh-so-good in the present day. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
He has released a video for “River,” and I’d like to give a hat tip to SoulBounce for alerting me to the release of the video. According to the Soulbounce article, Bridges said he wrote the song at a point when “had little hope and couldn’t see a way out of my reality.” You can feel the emotion in the song, and see it in this video.
For a uninterrupted take of the song, here it is below:
And as a bonus, here’s the video for one of his first singles, also found on Coming Home. Here’s “Smooth Sailin'”:
If you want to hear vintage soul brought up to the present day, take a listen to this young man. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
