The Morning Groove celebrated the talent of one Justin Timberlake, perhaps the most talented of the young white males currently singing (you Robin Thicke fans, leave your complaints down below) pop-soul music.
But before there was Timberlake, there was George Michael. First in Wham!, who is responsible for today’s Flashback Friday song (though many among us think Andrew Ridgeley did nothing in Wham!, right?), and then solo, George Michael had some highlight reel moments in the 80s and 90s. A number one R&B album (Faith), and song (One More Try). Pop success by the truckload. And then some controversy.
But for me, it’s always the songs. And this one here was one of my favorites by Wham! (uh George Michael). And in viewing this video, all I can say is…wow is this so 80s.
But, for some reason, when I saw it, I think of NBC’s attempt to make a late night video show, which was called Friday Night Videos when it debuted back on July 29, 1983. I think the first time I saw the video was on that show. Of course, I had heard the song by then and loved it.
What say you? I know some of you probably don’t know it. Give it a listen and see what you think. And that guy doing background vocals in the video? That’s Andrew Ridgeley. Maybe it was a partnership. An unequal partnership, but still.
Whatever you think, here’s this week’s Flashback Friday. Enjoy and thanks for reading and listening.
