Flashback Friday: Freedom

I wanted to write this Flashback Friday post to give the ladies some more shine. About 20 years ago, Dallas Austin managed to get just about every big female name in R&B in a studio to perform the song “Freedom (Theme From Panther)” which served as the theme to the movie Panther. The movie was about the Black Panthers, as I recall, and didn’t really do all that much at the box office. The song, however, stuck with me.

I’m so sorry I couldn’t get a better quality video, but the audio sounds just as good as I remember it. A track with Vanessa L. Williams, Mary J. Blige, SWV, TLC, Caron Wheeler, Karyn White, Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Aaliyah, Zhané, and so many more all together on one track is hard to top. And while the song references black females, the sentiments are something all women can get behind.

An all-female rap version was also recorded, with the likes of Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Yo Yo, Left Eye from TLC, Salt-N-Pepa spitting the verses. Again, the video quality isn’t much, but the song is there.

“Freedom”, y’all.

  1. Hi T. Wayne,
I really liked this one! Like you, the song stuck with me as well; it is powerful.
I feel the same way about Angie Stone’s “Brotha.”
Oh, lest I forget, anytime Me’Shell’s in the house you better believe the bass is thumpin’
    Very nice choice!
