I Can’t Do Without What ‘Cha Givin’

One of my favorite singers ever is having a birthday soon. And while that day’s morning groove (actually next Wednesday) will feature a song from her solo work, today’s morning groove and Flashback Friday post will feature songs she performed while a part of the band Rufus. Interestingly enough, both songs are from the same album.

The morning groove for today is one of my all-time favorite songs by Rufus and Chaka. The Flashback Friday one ranks right up there too. If you know history and albums, once you see what I’ve chosen, you can probably guess what the Flashback joint will be.

As for today’s song, it was co-written by Ray Parker, Jr. and Chaka. At that time, Ray was a session guitarist; this was prior to his band Raydio and his solo work. Many of you may remember the theme song to the movie Ghostbusters, which he had as a huge record in the 80s. At any rate, I don’t believe Parker was playing the guitar lead on this song (though he could have been; Rufus was on the verge of losing three members, including the lead guitarist, after the Rags To Rufus album was released). Even if he wasn’t, the guitar is what I remember most about this song. It has just the right mix of funk and rock. And it has a 20 year old Chaka Khan on top. What more could anyone ask for?

Here’s the morning groove for today. TGIF! Enjoy your weekend, and as always, thanks for listening and reading.

      1. I’m sorry for the miscommunication, I was saying that I hoped that YOU hadn’t already addressed “Jamie” on a different post. I just didn’t want to ask you about a song that you had already talked about.
So far, I haven’t gotten around to RPJr or Chaka. but you better bet I will as I go further into the 1970’s and 80’s
