Last night’s battles episode of The Voice was quite an improvement over last Tuesday’s show. The battles were better, for sure. However, we were given our first battle montage of the season! Again, NBC-I beg you: one season please! Even if you have to take a break in the middle of it. We’re missing too many singers! Particularly one Katherine Ho, who we haven’t seen a complete performance from yet, and she’s through to the knockout rounds. Since I gave that one away, I’ll also say that naturally no one was stolen in the montage battles. So in three battles that featured pairings from Pharrell Williams, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton’s teams, the resulting winners were:
Moushumi over Jonathan Hutcherson (Team Pharrell)
Katherine Ho over Lily Green (Team Adam)
Angie Keilhauer over Teresa Guidry (Team Blake)
Here’s their montage video. Not even going to try to list the songs they sang, even as the caption for the video lists them.
As for the other six battles, two were really good, three went about as expected and one had (at least for me) a shocking ending.
Really good battles: The battles between Abby Celso and Brian Nhira (Team Pharrell) and Alisan Porter and Lacy Mandigo (Team Christina Aguilera) were the two best on the night. Naturally, the loser for each was stolen. Abby and Brian were given the task to sing Maroon 5’s “Sugar”, and both were up to it. I said at the end of the battle that it was too close to call, but Abby was chosen the winner by Williams. Brian was stolen by Levine. Alisan and Lacy sang “California Dreamin'” by The Mamas & The Papas, as done by Sia. Porter has been the front-runner so far in the competition and did not disappoint, giving another powerhouse performance; but Lacy’s performance was good enough that even though she lost, she ended up being stolen by Shelton.
Battles as expected: The next three pairings didn’t really pull any surprises. Adam Wakefield took on Jared Harder in a Team Blake pairing. Wakefield has so much soul in his singing that to me, it wasn’t a close contest, as the two took on “Can’t You See” by the Marshall Tucker Band. I thought it was an easy victory for Wakefield. In a Team Pharrell pairing, Emily Keener took on Jonathan Bach singing Ellie Goulding’s “Explosions.” While I thought Jonathan was a bit better, I wasn’t surprised that Williams chose Keener as the winner, as he often will pick a winner based on their potential. And in the last battle in this group, a Team Christina pairing of Daniel Passino and Kristen Marie did a duet of “Turning Tables” by Adele. This was a tough call for Aguilera, but she went with Passino, and I think it was the right choice.
Shocker!: Maybe not for everyone, but it certainly was for me. Given the fact that Mike Schiavo had his blind audition leaked, and that he sounded really good there, and was going against Caroline Burns who to me was way weaker, I thought Schiavo would win in a walk. But this Team Adam pairing went nothing like I thought it would. Given “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” as sung by Meghan Trainor and John Legend, I still thought he was better. Yet the people I watch with thought that he coasted, while Caroline gave it all she had. And in the end, while he went easy on her, Adam picked her as the winner. Perhaps even more shocking, no one picked Schiavo up to steal. And so, a singer who I thought was a contender is sent packing.
