Looking over the review of Zhané’s debut album, Pronounced Jah-Nay, at the AllMusic Guide website, Jose F. Promis called today’s song “glorious, elegant, and sleek.” I didn’t write a review, but if I did, those are the words I would use for today’s morning groove.
Jean Norris and Renee Neufville, the two young ladies who made up the group, exploded on the scene in 1993 with the smash “Hey Mr. D.J.” The song would eventually become a top ten pop and R&B hit, and would eventually be found on their debut album which was released a few months later. As debuts go in the mid-90s, you would be hard pressed to find many, if any, better than theirs. Today’s song was the third single released from the project, which became their third successive top 5 R&B hit, while just making the pop top 40.
What I love about this song is the easy, shuffling groove, and its simplicity. In some ways, the feel is similar to yesterday’s morning groove. The ladies sound wonderful, and everything is in perfect harmony. Without a doubt, it is my favorite song from the album. Even though “Hey Mr. D.J.” and it’s follow-up “Groove Thang” were bigger hits, it is this one that I gravitate to time and time again.
Sadly, that album was the high water mark for Zhané. The second album, Saturday Night, did not approach the success of the debut, and not long after, the duo went their separate ways. Today, both are still working in music on different projects; Norris (now known as Jean Norris-Baylor or Jean Baylor), was featured on Brandon Williams’ 2014 release XII on the song “Stronger,” while Neufville released a new single late last year called “Watching Me.” Neither have lost anything from their days as a duo.
So, today’s morning groove is “Sending My Love” by Zhané. Take it in, and I hope you enjoy it. And as always, thanks for reading and listening.
