Today’s Morning Groove proved to be so popular, even rappers had to jump on the song and make their own versions of it.
Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, the husband and wife team from the Talking Heads, formed this side project from the band in 1981. Later that year, they had released their first album as the Tom Tom Club. I wonder if they knew that today’s song would become such a smash that it would be influential to so many immediately after it’s release and for so many years down the road.
It wasn’t long after “Genius Of Love” proved itself to be a club hit that Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde both jumped on the song to make rap versions of the hit; neither of which proved to be as popular or enduring as the original.
Fast forward fourteen years later, and Mariah Carey, looking to break out of the strict pop audience she had cultivated for her early career, decided to sample the song for her hit “Fantasy.” And while it (and the remix featuring Puff Daddy and Old Dirty Bastard of the Wu-Tang Clan) helped start the ball rolling for a more hip-hop/R&B sound, it didn’t stop the song from hitting #1.
The song’s influence is still being felt in 2016. Recently, as part of a marketing campaign, Target had Tinashe and DJ Cassidy remake “Genius Of Love” for commercials heralding new Spring items at the store.
Personally, I prefer the original. But your mileage may vary.
A shout out to Lennon Carlyle at Fabulous With Glitches for a semi-inspiration for this post. She featured the Talking Heads for her weekly “Monday Prep” post, and it led me to this number by the offshoot of that band.
As always, thanks for reading and listening.
