Recently, I was doing some reading about songs that were popular during my senior year of high school, and I came across the band Starpoint. When a lot of people (okay, some people) think about the band from Maryland, they mainly remember the song “Object Of My Desire,” which was their biggest pop success. Someone like me who lives and breathes R&B and soul music, goes back further—all the way back to their debut single, “I Just Wanna Dance With You,” from 1980.
In the spring of my senior year, the band released the album It’s All Yours. In the band’s timeline, this was the album that preceded Restless, from which “Object Of My Desire” was found. While looking around on YouTube for a song to pick for today’s Flashback Friday post, I ran across the title track and first single from the album. Once I played it, I remembered that I hadn’t heard it in ages, and thrilled to it all over again. As often happens with me, I went back to those last few months before I became a high school graduate and some of the fun times I was having back then.
As for the band, they couldn’t quite replicate or grow their pop success after “Object,” but they were continually found on the R&B charts, where they posted three top ten hits and several more that made the top twenty. Today’s track is one of those top 20 charters. One of the charms of the band were the vocals of the lone female member, Renee Diggs. She could handle the uptempo tracks like today’s well enough, but she really shined on the ballads, with near perfect pitch when she sang. Sadly, Renee and her partner and fellow band member Ernesto Phillips, Jr., are both no longer with us, having passed away years ago. But for a time in the 1980s, Starpoint was one of those bands that while they weren’t superstars they kept chugging along making music that R&B fans and their base in Maryland enjoyed.
I hope you enjoy today’s Flashback Friday song, and I hope your weekend gets off to a great start. As always, thanks for reading and listening.
