The title would have you think I might be hungry. I ate my breakfast, rest assured.
If I’m hungry for anything, it’s the go-go drums in today’s Morning Groove.
Today is my first day back to work after 8 days off. I spent most of that time relaxing, listening to music, writing and one day I went to two different cookouts which had me out from noon until 11:30 that night. I figure, I’ll need something to get me going in the morning. I don’t drink coffee, so we pump up the tunes. Not to mention, it’s been a minute since I cranked up something that sounded like Washington, DC’s home-grown music.
By now, you’ve seen that today’s song is Jill Scott’s “It’s Love,” from her debut album Who Is Jill Scott? Words And Sounds Vol. 1. This is the album that put Scott on the map. She had previously recorded with the Roots, the hip-hop group that now serves as the house band on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show. She recorded and co-wrote the original version of their single “You Got Me,” but the official single release substituted Erykah Badu in her place. Not long after that, Jill signed as the first artist on Hidden Beach Recordings and released this album. Due to the success of singles “A Long Walk,” “He Loves Me (Lyzel In E Flat)” and “The Way,” the album cruised to platinum status.
While this particular song was never released as a single, it received plenty of airplay in the DC metro area and in Maryland in general, primarily because of the go-go sound in the track. Now if you don’t mind, before I head out of here to return to work, I’d like to jam that one more time.
As always, thanks for reading and listening.
