Funky Friday: Mindin’ My Business

Since it has been an Incognito kind of week, why not end it with some of their brand of funk?

As I mentioned in my review/appreciation post about the show I attended, Incognito’s co-founder and leader, Jean Paul “Bluey” Maunick, made mention of the group’s beginnings as an instrumental band. He also mentioned that he was a big fan of groups like Kool & The Gang, Earth, Wind & Fire and Tower of Power, because those were bands he saw in concert that inspired him to form a band in the first place. He also said those bands also showed that when he formed his band, he was definitely having a horn section!

Today for Funky Friday, I’m going with an instrumental fromΒ Adventures In Black Sunshine called “Mindin’ My Business.” Of those bands I named above, this one reminds me more of Earth, Wind & Fire than the others.

Those horn lines! Love them, and the guitar line that pushes the whole thing along. Thrown in those electric piano and synth solos, and how the whole song turns in a different direction towards the end and you’ve got funk, Incognito-style. It reminds me more of how funk and fusion combined in the 1970s than something that was made just over a decade ago.

I hope you enjoy this other side of Incognito, and I hope you have a great weekend! And as always, thanks for reading and listening.

  1. There is nothing better than funk guitar. I love the sound. I tried to play my electric like that but couldn’t get it right. You are right T.Wayne. I can clearly hear EWF (Serpentine Fire, etc). For some reason I was also reminded of AWB’s Pick Up the Pieces. This got my Friday ended in a good direction. Thanks!
