At the beginning of the 80’s dance music—then defined as disco—was pushed underground by the disco backlash. By 1983, dance music began to creep back into the mainstream, led by Madonna. Toward the end of the decade, dance pop was inescapable. There were songs influenced by house music out of Chicago, Latin freestyle songs from New York and Miami, and the further evolution of dance pop music from the Madonna template.
One of the artists who followed that route to pop glory was Taylor Dayne. Born Leslie Wunderman, she began singing in rock bands, but soon turned to dance music after releasing two singles under the name of Les Lee. Dayne was signed to Clive Davis’ Arista label in 1987 and her first single became a worldwide smash hit. Dayne’s “Tell It To My Heart” made the Pop top 5 and began a run of seven top ten Pop hits. It is her debut single that is today’s 80’s Mania Mondays song.
Possessed with a powerful voice, Dayne’s vocals managed to hold their own with the electronic beats of her dance singles. That voice also worked well with ballads, as her “I’ll Always Love You” and “Love Will Lead You Back” also were big hits. Even as her pop success faded after her first two albums, she continued to have dance hits well into the 2000s. Dayne has also done some acting, notably in Rude Awakening on Showtime, and continues to perform and tour today. “Tell It To My Heart” was recently featured on my Release Radar playlist on Spotify, which focuses on newer releases. If it’s not the original, it sounds pretty close to it. But in looking at her website, there’s no mention of a re-release of the song, even as a digital single is for sale at Amazon, with a release date of October 26.
Whether new or old, we’re taking a look back at one of the memorable dance-pop singles of the 80’s. I hope you remember and enjoy this song; and as always thanks for reading and listening.
