I Think You’ll Understand #RomanticTuesday

Today’s song is so well known, it would be difficult to come up with a lyric that no one would recognize. It’s a song written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. It was originally performed by the band that changed rock and roll forever. Growing up, I seemingly never heard it without the chorus of screaming girls in the background (though the original version doesn’t have that; I guess I mentally fill the screams in).

So what happens when a funk band takes the song and turns it into a slow jam? You get Lakeside’s version of “I Want To Hold Your Hand.” Welcome to today’s #RomanticTuesday song.

Lakeside’s biggest hit was “Fantastic Voyage,” but you couldn’t get any further from that song than this one. I don’t have any anecdotes that suggest what made this band try that song out, but there are a lot of people who will say that they thrill to this version almost as much as others feel about the original. As far as I know, it’s the only R&B cover of the song, though I can’t believe that’s true. It definitely is the only one to make the top 5, though.

Quiet storm lovers still love this one; it will always be popular with couples who love to slow dance and cuddle. If you’ve never heard it before, why not take it for a spin around the block. Surely you have five minutes to spare, and it certainly fits the #RomanticTuesday mold. I hope you like it, and as always thanks for reading and listening.

  1. Lakeside’s version of this classic is imbued with the soul that The Beatles pop anthem will never have in a million years.
While listening to it I could also hear a bit of gospel lurking in the orchestration and vocals. I am glad I took this tune for a spin.
Thanks for the intro to this hidden gem, T.Wayne. Now let’s get back to slowdancing at the party in our rec room…..

    1. You’re welcome, Susan. Lakeside’s version does bring all of that out, for sure.

You mean the rec room party where the lights are turned down low (or off), and people are hugged up just a little too light for the grownups’ liking? LOL

      1. I’ve confessed…though I should have left that little tidbit in the darkness of the rec room! Though it has been said, that which is done in the dark will eventually be brought into the light 😉

  2. When I saw the tags I KNEW WHAT WAS UP! YAAAASSSSS!
    This was the business.
They really did this song justice. I actually love the Beatles even though Mama said they could write good music they just couldn’t sing!
Having said that, I think this version is better 🙂
While we’re on the subject Twin…
