Here at A Joyful Process, I write about a lot of older music. I have written about songs from the 1960s, the 1970s, the 1980s, the 1990s and even into the 2000s (a few times). The week before Christmas, I did a whole week of songs from 2016 that were my favorites for the year. The response that series of posts received let me know that from time to time, I can feature some of the new music that I come across in my travels on the internet, through streaming services and on satellite, internet and even terrestrial radio. So today, I’m going to begin a weekly series about songs that are recent releases that have caught my ear.
First out of the gate is the Hot 8 Brass Band, whose cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” was featured in a Funky Friday post back in September. A couple of weeks ago, the band released its new single, “Working Together,” a cover of the Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly song that was that band’s first top ten R&B hit back in 1978. Hot 8 band member Bennie Pete explained that the band had to cover this song:
“The lyrics say, “We got to start learning how to do our thing and give each other some respect. We got to learn to give, I’m telling you like it is. Let’s work together and make this happen””, says bandleader Bennie Pete. “So while we were going through the trials and hard times as people and as a band, dealing with all our losses… We felt we had to cover it. We all feel deeply about the meaning and the message.”
With that in mind, here’s the Hot 8 version of “Working Together.” The video below features footage of people in New Orleans getting their groove on. The video is meant to give you the sensation of being at one of the city’s street parades, where the Hot 8 made their name years ago. Watching the dancing in the video is about enough to make anyone want to move and groove. I may have stood up and did a little dance myself; but there’s no video to back that claim up, so you’re going to have to take my word for it.
While these weekly posts will focus on new music, I feel as though I should reference the original version here. Here is Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly’s original:
The Hot 8 will be releasing a new album in the Spring entitled On The Spot and will be touring in February. If you would like to purchase the song, you can get it at all the digital retailers, as well as from their bandcamp site, which is located here.
Hope you enjoy “Working Together,” and as always, thanks for reading and listening.
