Smooth Jazz Sunday: Aspen

I’m actually writing this just before I head out for a weekend trip with some friends to Deep Creek Lake, over in the western side of the state of Maryland. The side of the state where I live is mostly flatland, but has plenty of water around it, whereas this other side of the state has mountains and its only ski resort, Wisp.

It was that thought about the resort and the town where we are going that made me think of this song as the Smooth Jazz Sunday pick. Far as I’m concerned, you can’t really go wrong with the Rippingtons, no matter what. “Aspen” is featured on the group’s fifth albumΒ Curves Ahead, the cover of which shows the band’s jazz cat mascot skiiing down a mountainside. This album may have been the first Rippingtons album I heard; it certainly ranks up there with my favorites by them.

By the time many of you read this, I’ll be getting ready to head back to the eastern shore of the state. I’m sure I’ll have had another great weekend away from home, with people I enjoy hanging with. A song like today’s often reminds me of those good times.

I hope you enjoy today’s Smooth Jazz Sunday pick, and as always, thanks for reading and listening.

P.S. for my musical “Twin”, Lady G from the Seekthebestblog, that IS Jeff Kashiwa on the sax on this one.

  1. Great horns, very happy, upbeat, free and easy. Hope your ski trip was fun and both legs are still intact. Between laughing at last night’s Saturday Night Live skits and swaying to some good jazz, I feel like the sun is starting to shine again. πŸ™‚

  2. Great pick…love Rippingtons! Oh wait…nevermind. This song transported me back to the early 90’s when I was dating this guy who introduced me to great jazz. He was a little shady, but he had good taste in music and women. πŸ˜€ Hope you enjoyed the mountains.

    1. Thank you Susan, I did have a good time! There are a couple other songs on that Rippingtons album that makes one think of skiing. They also have an album, Black Diamond, that also has a few tunes that reference skiing.

      1. Oh I’m not the GURU that the two of you are. I’ve tended to collect what sounds good not always paying attention to the artists’ name. Then when I hear it here, I realise “Hey, I have that music” So I’m re-discovering my stash of great music and happy to see the affirmation here Girlfriend!πŸ˜€
