80’s Mania Mondays: You’re Sleeping In A Spotlight

Today’s ’80’s Mania Monday song was this group’s biggest hit, if not its most well-known. In fact, today’s hit was the only one of their songs to make the top 40 on Billboard’sย Hot 100. It made it up to #3 and stayed there for three weeks in 1984. Though I know today’s song very well, it was another song done by this band that I would have thought was its biggest hit. If you go by the number of college parties where I heard it being played, I would have guessed it definitely was the biggest hit. However, the highest it ever got was #49 in 1980.

Todays 80’s Mania Monday hit is NOT “What I Like About You” by the Romantics. But you know what? I’m going to put it in the post anyway. The beer mud memories keep coming back to me, almost like a bad dream…but anyway, here’s the Romantics’ third-biggest hit.

That means that today’s featured song is “Talking In Your Sleep.”

Now to say that I didn’t hear today’s song plenty of times would be a falsehood. If memory serves, I even think they played it on Soul Train a few times, and they might have even been a guest. Well, whaddya know? Turns out that on an episode that aired in May of 1984, the band did appear on the show with the O’Jays.

At any rate, the band was formed in 1977 in Detroit, and received their first big break upon the release of “What I Like About You.” Today’s song was contained on their fourth, and biggest album,ย In Heat. Unfortunately for the band, their managers had been misappropriating funds from their live performances and records, causing them to lose a lot of momentum through the rest of the 1980s and into the 1990s. The Romantics are still performing today, with three of the original members. There is talk of new music on the horizon, but nothing has been released as of yet.

I hope you remember these songs by the Romantics, and if so, leave your impressions and memories in the comments. As always, thanks for reading and listening.

  1. Wow! Even GUYS had BIG HAIR in the 80’s. Love this line from Talking in Your Sleep, “Open up your heart and the truth comes out”–reminds me of poetry! It was a surprise to me that What I Like About You was the more popular of the two, I would have thought it the other way around. ๐Ÿ™‚
