Morning Groove: Heaven

To my knowledge, the band Inner Shade has only released one album. That album, 4 Corners, was released in 1998. Inner Shade was a side project for Jean Paul “Bluey” Maunick, the leader and co-founder of the legendary jazz-funk band Incognito. The sound of the band wasn’t too far off from Incognito, right down to vocals from Maysa Leak on today’s featured song.

The Morning Groove for today is “Heaven” by Inner Shade. If I do “Heavenly” for #RomanticTuesday, it seems only fitting to have a song called “Heaven” for the following day’s feature, no?

If you like strings, horns, funky basslines and danceable grooves, this one’s for you. I won’t say too much else about it, other than to say it’s another in a group of great songs that Maunick and Leak have performed over the last twenty-five years. Even if it’s not billed to Incognito, you can tell it’s not too far from their sound. Plus, that uptempo beat certainly can get your morning off to a flying start—and there’s nothing that sounds bad if Leak is singing on it.

I hope you enjoy “Heaven,” and as always, thanks for reading and listening.

  1. After listening to Incognito on Chevvy’s last Sunday Coming down, I would have guessed it was the same group… and I was ALMOST right, huh? Thanks for a lively groove to shake up my Wednesday. Woooooo! 🙂

    1. You WERE almost right! The musicians are different, but even then, some of them played in Incognito before Inner Shade got together.

You’re welcome, of course! Perhaps there was some chair dancing? Hmm? 🙂

    1. I never really put that together until your comment Susan. It does sound a bit like Benson! It reminds me of another song he played on, that I’m holding on to for a future post. The sound, I should say is similar, not exactly the solo in the song…but thanks for your good ear Susan! I’m glad you enjoyed the song.
