Jam It Or Slam It?: Maysa

For the first time in ages, I’m bringing back Jam It or Slam It?! The occasion that brings it back is a new release from Maysa Leak. I’ve written about her numerous times, including how I first heard her voice, and the time that I saw her live performing with Incognito.

In looking through my newsfeed, I saw that Maysa released a new song this week. It’s a bit of a different choice for her: it’s a cover of the Pat Benatar classic, “Love Is A Battlefield.” As a fan of the original, I wanted to hear how Maysa would perform the song. Naturally, she has an arrangement that fits into her usual style: an adult R&B track with smooth jazz touches. The song will be featured on the upcoming album of the same name, due to be released on May 26, 2017.

Count me among the ones who would Jam It! I really like the arrangement, and her vocals are impeccable as always. I also let The Teacher have a listen and she liked it too. Take a listen for yourself to see if you like the cover version.

As a reference, here’s the original from Benatar:

    1. Glad that you liked the song. Also, I’m not that far from you. I’m in Maryland on the Eastern Shore. Probably a couple hours from Philadelphia. I heard she was touring; I saw her with Incognito last fall in Annapolis.

  1. I like it, but there is nothing like the original Pat Benatar. Maysa slowed it down which was nice, but I love the fierceness like a battle cry in Benatar’s song.
